The Caregiver Action Network (CAN) is the nation's leading family caregiver organization working to improve the quality of life for more than 65 million Americans who care for loved ones with chronic conditions, disabilities, disease or the frailties of old age.
Although the name is new, the organization, formerly known as the National Family Caregivers Association, has been serving caregivers and their loved ones since 1993.
Allsup is pleased to be a founding partner of the organization, which welcomed in the new year with a dynamic name change, a revamped website and a renewed commitment to serve the broad spectrum of family caregivers. CAN members range from the parents of children with special needs, to the families and friends of wounded soldiers; from a young couple dealing with a diagnosis of MS, to adult children caring for parents with Alzheimer's disease. CAN is a non-profit organization providing education, peer support, and resources to family caregivers across the country free of charge.
"Our new name better communicates what we do to help family caregivers," said CAN CEO John Schall. "Caregiver Action Network connects caregivers to useful tools, peer support, information and advice from fellow caregivers. We are excited about the role we play in advocating for caregivers."
Allsup helped CAN usher in 2013 with a $2,500 grant that will go toward CAN programs and services that promote disability literacy. CAN and Allsup have collaborated on a number of caregiver resources that help them understand their own and their loved one's rights and options regarding Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Medicare, financial planning and access to community resources. These include a financial planning webinar and toolkit and SSDI and Medicare brochures.
