Your Return to Work Options
SSDI is one of several Social Security insurance programs covered by the FICA deductions that come out of your paycheck. It provides many valuable benefits to you, including a regular monthly income and Medicare coverage as soon as you become eligible. Work incentives are another important SSDI benefit. They’re also called your Ticket to Work and offer opportunities to explore your work options while still receiving your monthly benefit payment.
If you’re eligible for SSDI, you’re also eligible for return to work incentives. They're one of the many benefits of receiving SSDI. Generally, to qualify for SSDI, you must: 1. have a medical condition that prevents you from working for at least 12 months or is expected to result in death; 2. meet Social Security's definition of disabled including age and severity of condition; and 3. earn enough work credits to be considered insured by having working 5 out of the last 10 years.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) accepts applications, reviews them, and decides who will be paid benefits. It’s a lengthy process and each case can be difficult to evaluate, so there are extremely detailed documents, forms and often hearings required to prove you’re disabled. That’s why it’s so important to apply for SSDI benefits as soon as you become disabled.

These incentives extend and protect your benefits for several years after you go back to work, and are still there for you if you have to stop working again.

Trial work period (TWP)
For any 9 months that accumulate during a 60-month period, you can test your ability to work again and receive your full SSDI benefits in addition to your job earnings.
Extended period of eligibility (EPE)
After your TWP ends, you get full SSDI benefits for the first 3 months of this 36-month period in addition to your job earnings. After that, you receive SSDI benefits for any month your job earnings drop below $1,170 ($1,950 if blind).
Continuing Medicare coverage
After your TWP ends, your Medicare coverage continues for 93 consecutive months (7+ years). You still receive coverage during this time even if your SSDI payments end because your earning level went above the SSA limit.
Expedited reinstatement of benefits
If you become unable to work again within 5 years after your EPE ends, you can request to have your SSDI benefits restarted without filing a new application, even if your benefits ended because of your earning level.
Continuing Disability Review (CDR) protection
The SSA periodically reviews disability claims depending on age and medical condition to determine if you still qualify as disabled. As part of the Ticket to Work program, your CDR will be suspended.
