Allsup Congratulates American Association Of People With Disabilities Honorees
Supports employment of people with disabilities and benefits for those who cannot work
Belleville, Ill. — March 16, 2016 — Allsup congratulates the 2016 American Association of People with Disabilities’ (AAPD) Awards Gala honorees. The awards will be presented Wednesday, March 23, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington, D.C. Allsup, a nationwide Social Security Disability Insurance representation company, is a Gala sponsor.
Robyn Powell and Alice Wong will receive AAPD’s Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award, which recognizes emerging leaders in the national disability rights movement. Powell is the team leader for the Disabled Parenting Project, and served as an attorney advisor at the National Council on Disability, an independent federal agency that advises the president and Congress on matters concerning people with disabilities.
Wong is the founder and project coordinator, of the Disability Visibility Project, an online community dedicated to recording, amplifying and sharing disability stories and culture. The organization recently released a survey that ranked employment issues as a top area of concern.
“The unemployment rate for people with disabilities improved somewhat during the last year, but there is still a huge disparity,” said Mary Dale Walters, senior vice president of Allsup. The Allsup Disability Study: Income at Risk showed that in the fourth quarter of 2015, people with disabilities experienced an unemployment rate 58% higher than those without disabilities.
“The honorees and AAPD are among those leading the charge to eliminate this disparity, as is Allsup Employment Services, Inc. a Social Security-approved Employment Network. We are pleased to support those efforts.”
