Is SSDI just welfare for people too lazy to work?

The answer to that question is, “Absolutely not.” An article on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) by Dylan Matthews on Vox.com, shatters myths and misconceptions about the program most American workers pay for out of every paycheck.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) reports the following statistics:

• The average disability beneficiary today paid into the disability trust fund for 22 years before becoming entitled to Social Security disability benefits.
• Those who became disabled at age 50 or later had earned the equivalent of more than 30 years of work credits, on average.
• One in five men and nearly one in six women who enter the program die within 5 years.
